TSB has begun an Investigation into the Implosion of the Titan Submersible

The TSB is investigating the cause of the implosion

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has begun an investigation into the implosion of the Titan submersible following its return to port in Newfoundland.

The TSB is investigating the cause of the implosion, as well as the safety of the submersible and its operation.

The Titan submersible was launched from the Polar Prince support ship on June 1, 2023. The submersible was on a routine dive to explore the wreck of the SS Saguenay, a steamship that sank in 1942. However, the submersible suffered an implosion while on the dive, and all three occupants were killed.

The TSB has interviewed the crew of the Polar Prince and the operators of the Titan submersible. The TSB has also recovered the wreckage of the submersible and is conducting a detailed examination.

The TSB is expected to issue a preliminary report on the investigation in the coming weeks. A final report will be issued once the investigation is complete.

The implosion of the Titan submersible is a serious incident, and the TSB is committed to determining the cause and taking any necessary actions to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

Here are some of the questions that the TSB is likely to be investigating:

  • What caused the implosion of the Titan submersible?

  • Was the submersible properly maintained?

  • Were the operators of the submersible properly trained?

  • Were there any safety procedures that were not followed?

The TSB's investigation will help to ensure that the safety of submersible operations is improved, and that similar incidents are prevented in the future.
